Imlay City Volleyball Captains Shine: Emma Keeping & Makayla Bruman Lead the Spartans
The Imlay City volleyball program is surging in the 2025 season, climbing to No. 5 in the Division 2 rankings. The Spartans have emerged as one of the state’s toughest contenders, and their rise has been fueled by a mix of talent, preparation, and leadership.
At the center of it all are two senior captains, Emma Keeping and Makayla Bruman. More than just statistical leaders, they’ve become the steady heartbeat of the Spartans — players who set the tone in practice, bring energy on game day, and inspire teammates with their drive.
Their coach, Nicole Jones, summed it up this way:
“Every successful team has players who set the tone, carry the energy, and lead by example. For our program, that heartbeat comes from two seniors — Emma Keeping and Makayla Bruman.” – Coach Nicole Jones
Emma Keeping Hits 1,000 Career Kills 🏐🔥
On September 16, senior setter/opposite hitter Emma Keeping reached a milestone that few players ever achieve, recording her 1,000th high school career kill in a league matchup. Keeping, who has committed to continue her career at Wake Forest University on a full athletic scholarship as a setter, has been a steady scoring force and one of the state’s top performers. She has also drawn statewide recognition as a Miss Volleyball candidate, nominated by MIVCA as a setter/opposite hitter.

Makayla Bruman Closing in on 2,500 Career Assists 🎯👏
Fellow captain Makayla Bruman continues to orchestrate the Spartans’ offense as setter and opposite hitter. Bruman, a future Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal, is closing in on 2,500 career assists while proving to be one of the most reliable playmakers in the area. Her size, vision, and consistency make her indispensable to Imlay City’s attack.

A Dynamic Duo of Leadership
Success for Imlay City this season isn’t just about rankings or records — it’s about the steady presence of players who raise the standard every day. For the Spartans, that presence comes from senior captains Keeping and Bruman. They’ve become the spark that drives their teammates, whether in the middle of a tense rally or during a routine practice drill.
Coach Nicole Jones believes that energy is what sets her captains apart:
“Together, they represent the competitive spirit and resilience of our program. Whether it’s leading a comeback, pushing teammates to give their best in practice, or setting the standard for work ethic, Emma and Makayla embody what it means to be senior leaders. Their impact stretches beyond the stat sheet — they’ve become role models for younger players and the true foundation of this year’s success.” – Coach Nicole Jones
Lasting Impact on the Program 🚀
Looking beyond the current season, Coach Jones sees the legacy her captains will leave behind. For her, their contributions are measured not only in milestones and wins, but in the culture they’ve built and the example they’ve set for future Spartans. As she reflects on their impact, Jones offers a perspective filled with gratitude:
“I am truly honored to coach Emma and Makayla. Their dedication and passion have left a lasting impact on this program, and I know the lessons they’ve shared will continue to shape our team long after they’ve graduated.” – Coach Nicole Jones
With momentum on its side and a top-five ranking in hand, Imlay City now turns its attention to the next stretch of competition. The Spartans enter a pivotal week that will test their consistency against familiar league rivals and provide another chance to strengthen their standing in Division 2.
