Will the Detroit Lions Ever Make the Super Bowl? A Michigan Dad’s Honest Answer

The Super Bowl is over. Another champion crowned.
This year, it was the Seattle Seahawks.

Like a lot of Michigan households, my sons and I were on the couch trying to figure out who to root for. We landed on Seattle — the Michigan State tie-in with Kenneth Walker III made that easy enough. A Spartan getting a ring? Sign us up.

But somewhere along the way, the conversation shifted.

“Dad… do you think the Lions are ever going to make the Super Bowl?”

That’s when it hit me.
They’d been pulled into it. The Lions vortex.

This Mitten Minute captured the moment — but the question it raised goes deeper.

For Lions fans, this isn’t just a hypothetical. Only four teams have never made a Super Bowl. Twelve have never won one. The Detroit Lions sit in both groups.

So how do you answer that question honestly?

You can say “maybe next year.”
You can joke about hell freezing over.
Or you can admit the truth — you don’t really know.

After decades of watching this franchise, I didn’t have a confident answer. And that’s the hardest part. Thirty-one teams chase the Super Bowl every season. Good teams miss it. Great teams miss it. It’s brutally hard to get there.

Which means Lions fans eventually have to face a possibility no one wants to say out loud:
it might never happen.

And yeah — that sucks.

Watching the Super Bowl without the Lions isn’t new. It’s what we’ve always done. But watching it while your kids are old enough to ask why hits different. You want better for them. You want them to experience the thing you never got.

All you can do is hope Dan Campbell and this version of the Lions finally get it right.

Because a Lions Super Bowl wouldn’t just be a football moment.
It would be closure — for generations.
